The most common thing I hear is " I am worried about saying or doing the wrong thing"
If you have an idea about working with Indigenous people or cultural knowledge on a project or initiative but are unsure about how to navigate it or where to begin, I can help. Integrating cultural knowledge into a western way of working can be difficult, how ever this is what I do best and what I have done for over a decade as an academic in tertiary education.
Hi I'm Kevin Taylor a Yamatji- Noongar man from Perth, brought up in the Pilbara. I have over a decade of experience working in the tertiary education sector lecturing and researching on Indigenous culture and health. I hold a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Business Administration, have completed my company directors training and am currently completing my PhD in developing a cultural education package with the aged care workforce on the quality of life of Elders. I have spent most of the past decade developing Indigenous educational resources, providing training to industry and supporting curriculums while serving on academic boards and committees advising on cultural matters.
I have worked with industry and supported the mining leaders as a business partner following the destruction of Juukan gorge and provided guidance on Indigenous ways of working. I have had the honour of being selected to be on the judging panel of the Premier's science award, be appointed Director of the Berndt Museum of Anthropology helping communities access and preserve cultural materials. In my current role of head of Indigenous education development at UWA I have supported Indigenous curriculum development across the university sector and have provided webinars and workshops to multiple local, national and international audiences and organisations on Indigenous topics. In my time as an academic and in teaching Indigenous cultural perspectives to thousands of students I have come to understand that cultural capability occurs through building connections between people and Indigenous ways of knowing being and doing.
